cempedak
Detailed etymology
definitions
noun
- the Artocarpus integer var. integer tree, or its edible fruit. The tree is native to Southeast Asia and grows up to 20 m tall, and bears large, capsule-shaped fruits around 20 - 35 cm long and 10 - 15 cm in diameter.[1] The fruit has a thick, bumpy skin resembling that of a jackfruit, and has a fragrance resembling that of a durian, albeit less pungent and offensive. It is related to breadfruit and jackfruit.[2]
Unlike other hawkers, the stall offers more inter-meal grub than a full meal, the highlight being their popular cempedak fritters. Despite it being of the same genus as jackfruit, this fruit was one I had yet to try.
