* Singlish is a largely spoken creole, and as such descriptivism (recording forms that reflect actual pronunciation in spoken language, or as appearing in the linguistic corpus) is more pertinent than strict prescriptivism. Nevertheless, the use of more standard forms (or for words originating in languages with Latin script, such as Malay, accurate to the original spelling) is recommended and encouraged.

noun

  1. Neobalanocarpus heimii, a tree native to Singapore that grows up to 60 m tall. It was historically important as a good source of high quality timber and resin, for uses such as boatbuilding.[1] It is believed that Changi (the location) takes its name either from this tree, or from Hopea sangal, also known as "chengal pasir" or "chengal mata kucing".[2]
