* Singlish is a largely spoken creole, and as such descriptivism (recording forms that reflect actual pronunciation in spoken language, or as appearing in the linguistic corpus) is more pertinent than strict prescriptivism. Nevertheless, the use of more standard forms (or for words originating in languages with Latin script, such as Malay, accurate to the original spelling) is recommended and encouraged.

definitions

noun

  1. a small, light, airy, brittle, very dry biscuit made from sago starch (or sometimes tapioca starch), coconut milk or cream, eggs, sugar, salt, and pandan, traditionally eaten during festive seasons such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. Because they are so dry (from the lack of water in the ingredients) and airy (from expansion, bangkit, after baking), they tend to have a melt-in-the-mouth texture. They are often made in attractive shapes such as flowers, hearts, butterflies, other animals, etc.
  2. When we were young, the grown-ups would sit around a stove with a fan in one hand and a towel in the other for the sweat to bake the toothsome kueh bahulu. Once the freshly baked kueh bahulu were ready, the kids would immediately stop whatever games they were playing and rush forward to pop a piece in their mouths.
