* Singlish is a largely spoken creole, and as such descriptivism (recording forms that reflect actual pronunciation in spoken language, or as appearing in the linguistic corpus) is more pertinent than strict prescriptivism. Nevertheless, the use of more standard forms (or for words originating in languages with Latin script, such as Malay, accurate to the original spelling) is recommended and encouraged.

noun

  1. a sweet steamed Malay confection consisting of a white top layer of rice flour and coconut milk over a bottom layer usually coloured and flavoured with either pandan or gula melaka, traditionally made in a large tray and cut into smaller slices for serving
  2. Finally, I turn to my favourite kueh talam, the top half white with coconut milk and the bototm half a dark green. The aroma of the pandan leaves hits my nose as I take deep, joyous breaths. An older lady standing next to me tells me that the kueh seller, Haji Noh, with his white cap and shirt and green sarong, is particularly proud of his kueh talam.
