Etymological history is unclear, other than the word existing in Proto-Malayo-Polynesian. It is possibly the root word from which the words lime and lemon in many other world languages derive; if not, it could have first been borrowed from an Indian language — compare Sanskrit निम्बू, nimbū ("lime").
