Alteration of Bengali, primarily by Chinese-language speakers. Compare for example the b/m consonant sound shift in Hokkien in words such as 肉, which may variously be pronounced bah (bak chor mee) or mah (mah mee). Perhaps instead from the Indian given name Mangali, in the same vein as mat for Malays or Ah Beng for the Chinese, though this is unlikely.
