Malay:
mee siam
Detailed etymology
definitions
noun
- a noodle dish consisting of bee hoon with a sweet, sour, and savoury gravy of rempah (a spice mix), assam (tamarind), and tau cheo. It is usually topped with a hard boiled egg sliced in half lengthwise, a meat such as chicken or prawns, and vegetables.
But the mee siam made me swallow my sneer. It was boldly flavoured and perfectly balanced between sweet, sour, and savoury. The fresh king prawns on top brought their own sweetness to the dish, while the noodles were slippery without being too soggy. Its generous portion sealed the deal.
