usage notes
Unlike in other English-speaking countries, where a polytechnic is usually equivalent to a college- or university-level institution, Singaporean polytechnics are more equivalent to technical institutes.
Just like in most other English dialects, the term is usually clipped to poly in informal speech and writing.
