Detailed etymology
definitions
noun
- a sandwich made with a loaf of “French-style” bread (i.e. any long or oblong bread loaf, such as a baguette, batard, sub roll, large hot dog bun, etc.) fried on a flattop griddle with an omelette made of eggs, minced meat, onions, etc. It is topped with tomato and chilli sauce and sometimes cheese, then folded and chopped transversely into roughly three to five pieces before serving.
It is believed to be based loosely on a hamburger or some other similar Western sandwich. The dish originated in Singaporean cuisine, but has become popular throughout neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
