Detailed etymology
definitions
noun
- (military) a warrant officer; an officer who is not commissioned but holds a higher rank and office than specialists or other non-commissioned officers by virtue of having a warrant
- (military) term of address for a warrant officer
usage notes
Rarely used as a term of address when directly speaking to a warrant officer, where the terms Encik (male), Cik (female), or the warrant officer's specific appointment relative to the speaker (e.g. Sergeant Major) are used instead. The term is usually used when speaking about a specific warrant officer in conversation, e.g. 'Warrant Alvin told us to check through the armskote book again', where they are referred to by 'Warrant' + their first name.
