noun

  1. the tree Dimocarpus longan or its edible fruit, which are spherical and around 2 - 3 cm in diameter with a thin, firm, leathery, yellow-brown skin and translucent white, mildly sweet flesh. The skin splits open along a longitudinal line when squeezed, while the centre of the fruit contains a single large black seed. This gives it the appearance of an eye, with the skin being the eyelids and the flesh and seed being the sclera and iris respectively. It is related to the lychee, rambutan, and pulasan.
  2. Jackfruit, for example, is churned into ice cream and covered in a disarrayed dune of young coconut mousse, fresh longan and shards of almond ginger cake.
